Not to mention, if you listen there is this annoying sound through much of the recording - it could be an echo, but I suspect that someone else was reading something nearby. He also has killed the pronunciation on several words - so badly that I would not have known what the word was if it were not in context, and at least once referred to a female character as "he". He does try to change his voice to do different characters, but with minor characters especially I find that they sound one way in one part of a scene and then different a little later. I simply can not take these characters seriously! Also, the reader is less than impressive. The story is good, but the dialog is often choppy and feels like a characature of what "real" characters would do and say in this situation. Nuff said.Ī friend suggested I listen to the Prey books, and by chance this is my first one. The villain's a foul funny guy who deserves a comeuppance - Totally! You know it'll come, right? Or will it? Fine stuff. Here's what professional commercial writing looks like, and through Ferrone's voice, what it sounds like. Don't you like that in the guy? Well I do, and I like Sanford's rarely disappointing craftsmanship. Here again he follows, misuses, and bumps. He follows breadcrumbs of facts, frequently guesses wrong, and bumps into things. They're as much about the trip as the destination. That's the way with Lucas Davenort novels, they're a whirled of fun. Sanford's reeeeeeely major league (for example see my review of 'Saturn Run'). If the Phillies played the Lancaster Barnstormers, well the winner'd be predictable, but both the major league talent and even the minor league enthusiasm would be great to watch. Okay, so this thing is predictable early on. I recommend this novel, this series and this author to those who like intense suspense thrillers. Richard Ferrone narrates all of the Sandford novels I have listened to. All of his novels do not earn 5 stars, but all are quite good and most earn at least 4 stars. John Sandford is an outstanding author of modern detective novels. Gathering Prey, book 25 in the series, features college student Letty and is my favorite of the novels in the series I have listened to. (The couple are engaged to be married in this book.) When their adopted daughter Letty became interested in law enforcement and became a major character the series gets even better. I did not especially like the Lucas Davenport character in early novels in the series, but after Weather became his girlfriend and later wife author John Sandford changed the Davenport character to a more responsible person. It is novel 12 in what will be the 27 novel Lucas Davenport series when Golden Prey is released next month. Chosen Prey is an excellent suspense thriller about a university art professor who is a serial killer of young women that fit a specific profile. Of John Sandford's 44 unabridged audio novels more than half are in my Audible library. An excellent detective novel about a serial killer
